Testing your IQ
Giftedness simply put is when an individual’s ability is significantly above the normal rates seen in the peer group. Giftedness is not always about IQ – It can exist in a variety of domains; intellectual, creative, artistic, and leadership. In some individuals, their giftedness can exhibit itself in a single topic such as; math, science, history, or language arts. Notably this is different from savant syndrome, where an individual who has significant limitations and/or a mental disability exhibits exaggerated skill in one of a select few areas typically related to memory or artistic ability.
Not all gifted children look or behave the same. Giftedness can present itself in any number of ways and shows up in individuals of all races, nationalities, genders, and personality types. Being gifted doesn’t mean that you are simply able to fend for yourself in academic pursuits, actually it’s the opposite. Gifted individuals process information in a different way than people with typical intelligence, it’s because of this that its important to identify gifted individuals and give them the necessary support in academic settings so that they can continue to be supported and challenged in ways that stimulate their development rather than stunting it.
